The original "Educating Rita," a long-running London stage hit by Willy Russell, had only the two characters. There is a minor glitch in the establishing scene at the beginning, but to see Rita once again in widescreen is almost like seeing it for the very first time.

Whatever its faults and flaws might be, I've never been able - or wanted to - get 'Educating Rita' out of my head. The books are like incantations that, used properly, will exorcise Cockney accents and alcoholism.

ER is an interesting film that kind of grows on you, as you watch it, which is only because of the chemistry between two great actors, Caine, as the inebriated and huggable professor, who doesn't mind the odd drink or ten, and Walter as the budding new student who wants to learn everything.
