The blurb led me to expect something mediocre - Hardy's first novel, hints of greatness, ultimately flawed etc.

Students of Hardy will see everywhere anticipations of the later work, in terms of style, ideas and technical experiment. In my Delphi collection of Thomas Hardy, in the introduction to Desperate Remedies it says this was his first published novel since his real first story, The Poor Man and the Lady was destroyed by him and never put to print.
Instead the reader is propelled through the story by an urge to solve mysteries, one of which is not entirely cleared up until the final pages. It started like an Austen or a Mrs. Gaskell romance, young girl forced into a marriage with a man she didn't love because of her poor circumstances.

Desperate Remedies is the second novel by Thomas Hardy, albeit the first to be published. It would have been so easy to make her unsympathetic but she became the heroine. Great fun, powerful, so well written, with a wonderful cast.
It does not bring social commentary to the fore-front, however.
I'm glad I found it, however, for this was a really interesting novel and an entertaining and surprising one.

Considering how many of Thomas Hardy’s novels were made into movies, I’m surprised that this one wasn’t. This is his attempt at "the sensational novel", and I for one feel he succeeds well.
