As I climbed out of the Coal Creek basin I was judging how much more I had to climb. The path gently descends down to the Coal Creek valley though a mixed beech-podocarp forest.

A pleasant hike. The falls are fairly straightforward to photograph. Trail was easy and great for the kids. Washington Trails Association I’d recommend to park at Red Town trailhead.

A little creepy going alone but it was safe overall when I went. For the nimble-footed, climbing up next to the left side of the falls yields slightly more revealing perspectives, however to frame the entire falls, you need a focal range wider than 24mm and to joust with a few tree branches which encroach on the view. Coal Creek Falls via Nike Horse trail is a 3.4 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Bellevue, Washington that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. This trail was our first hike and it was pretty fun.

Stream between two tiers of a waterfall is counted in its overall height regardless of whether or not that section of the stream would be legitimately considered a waterfall on its own right, were it to be isolated. 12 and 8 year old boys enjoyed this hike -- well maintained (heavy traffic), nice waterfall. Elevation:   892 feet It was a nice hike with good elevation gane. A rough estimation of how many months out of the year the stream which produces the waterfall will actually hold water. Easy hike. I saw a number of people on my way back to the parking lot and one large group which appeared to be a 8th or 9th grade class on a field trip. Be sure to take a free map of the trail system at the trailhead. Easy trail.

The falls do run dry during the summer months, usually mid June to whenever the rainy season starts up again in the winter.There is a large parking lot at the trailhead, but it’s heavily used and fills up quickly.

As I ascended and was looking at the ridge top imagine my surprise when I saw a bunch of houses. While plumb uses eight distnct forms, we wanted further granularity and opted to break down the hierarchy twofold: first based on the overall pitch of the waterfall, and then based on what shape the fall takes as it makes its descent. There are lots of leaves down on the trail masking the mud (I slipped a few times) and the colors at least today were really nice. Trail has a slight consistent incline for the first half mile or so but totally doable for my 4 and 8 year olds. Even with the wet fall we've had and the recent rains this week he said the falls were a trickle. Make sure you find the Horse trail vs the Old Man Trail. Great spot to get out of Seattle for a little bit. This is often the most difficult figure to pin down because accurately measuring streamflow is not a simple process.

The trail follows Coal Creek before hooking back up with the Coal Creek Trail that takes you to it's western trailhead off of Coal Creek Parkway just up the street from Factoria Mall. Trails aren’t marked as clearly as I would have hoped. There is a carpark at the end of Ballance Street. You can also take sky country, then old man and it eventually connects to coal creek, but it is longer. Really enjoyed taking pictures at the waterfall. The volume of water present in the stream at the location of the waterfall. The pool below the falls is a nice place to cool off with a swim in the hot summer months.

Lots of cool mushrooms on the trail too. Within a few minutes I heard running water and came to the North Fork Falls which was flowing (somewhat) so I stopped there and took some pictures and then continued my journey west.

Entries which specify a Flow Consistncy of 12 Months should in general have an acceptable flow at any time of year (but may be better during certain periods - see below). There may be variance within the range specified where the flow will be better or worse, but visiting at any time in the range specified (if available) will generally present the waterfall in its best light. I thought did I take a wrong turn? From Greymouth follow SH6 northeast for 8 km to Runanga. Be sure to stay on the trail so as to avoid the deeper and potentially dangerous cave holes.

Creek was dried up but a pretty good hike! My 11 yr old struggled but made it. From Seattle head east on I-90.
